Driving Tips

I-95 New Haven Harbor Crossing Corridor Improvement Program Courteous Driving Guidelines:

  • Know the speed limit and reduce your speed. Safety is priority; you must be able to adjust to variable lane changes and traffic patterns
  • Read the signage on the roads and highways. Signs are posted to guide you to the appropriate lane, alert you to crossing or merging traffic, and inform you of detour routes.
  • Pay attention to electronic signs on the highway which will inform you of the changing road conditions ahead.
  • Don't tailgate, leave a reasonable distance between you and the car in front of you. Rear end collisions are the most common crashes on the interchange.
  • Stay alert and minimize distractions while driving. Dedicate your full attention to the road and look out for what other drivers are doing.
  • Plan ahead and schedule enough time to get to your destination safely. Be prepared for possible delays during high volume traffic times.
  • Know how and when to move safely into traffic and communicate your intentions to other drivers by using signal lights.
  • Pay close attention to the braking behavior of others. While you are looking behind for a safe gap to merge into, the car ahead may slow down or abruptly stop.
  • To allow for merging traffic consider moving over a lane as a courtesy to vehicles entering the highway, but be sure the lane to your left is free of traffic before you do.
  • For crossing traffic, be courteous and leave adequate room for others to move into their designated lane.
